Miscellaneous

Hitschler is the surname of the company founder.

Ferdinand Hitschler founded the Cologne-based retail company Hitschler’s Cachou in the 1920s. His son Walter Hitschler joined the company in the 1940s.  After his father’s death, Walter Hitschler renamed the company from Ferdinand Hitschler & Sohn GmbH to the present-day hitschler International GmbH & Co. KG in the early 1950s.

The company roots reach as far back as the 1920s, when the original company founder Ferdinand Hitschler established the Cologne-based retail company Hitschler’s Cachou. His son Walter Hitschler joined the company in the mid 1940s. He quickly realised that the demand for sweets was enormous, especially among children, and decided to specialise in children’s items and chewing gum.

In the early 1950s, after the death of his father Ferdinand Hitschler, Walter Hitschler renamed the company from Ferdinand Hitschler & Sohn GmbH to its present-day name, hitschler International GmbH & Co. KG, at which point the company focused its range entirely on sweets. In 2015 we are celebrating our 80 year anniversary of the company.

hitschler products are unique because of their high quality and exceptional flavour. We use first-class raw materials in the production of our sweets and constantly monitor the quality of our products. Our manufacturing processes are certified ‘Higher Level’ in accordance with the International Food Standard (IFS).

Our manufacturing processes are audited and certified in accordance with the extremely rigorous International Food Standard (IFS), which serves to ensure maximum food safety and quality for the consumer.

This also means that we cannot guide visitors through our production lines. We ask for your understanding.

Without our sweets, carnival in Cologne would be unimaginable for us and many Cologne residents, as confirmed by the increasing number of requests we receive every year for donations for the ‘fifth season’. Because we cannot fulfil everyone’s wishes and do not want to discriminate against anyone, we are unable to donate.

If you want to stock up for the season of fun, you can of course obtain our products at most wholesale outlets. Should you have any additional questions regarding our carnival range, we would be happy to help you.

Where does the name HITSCHIES come from?

In the early 1980s, we created our unique, crunchy, sugar-coated fruit chews. Initially called ‘Fruchtige Häppchen’, these treats quickly developed into a cult product and a hallmark of the hitschler company. But because our sweets are in high demand not only in Germany but all over the world, a new, internationally understandable name had to be developed for this unique product. So ‘Fruchtige Häppchen’ became ‘HITSCHIES’ – a sugar-coated fruit chew that is unique to this day and produced in a wide range of flavours, including sour flavour.

How long do hitschler products keep?

A best-before date is printed on every bag and package. Depending on the product, our sweets usually keep for 12 to 24 months.

But that’s not to say you can’t eat or enjoy the products after the best-before date. If the packaging is unopened, you can eat them after the best-before date without any worries.

How and where should hitschler products be stored?

The great thing about our products is that you can enjoy them at any temperature, whether in the cold of winter or the heat of summer. As a rule, the products should be stored at room temperature and not exposed to direct sunlight for a long period of time, but they don’t need to be refrigerated.

We’ve been striving to live up to the high quality standards of hitschler products every day for over 50 years. If you’re ever unsatisfied with one of our products, please contact us by post.

So that we can get to the bottom of the issue and take the necessary measures, we ask that you provide us with the following. In this way, you will be helping us to make improvements:
